I've been working with numerous tables (creating them, that is) in
MSDE.
Everything's working fine aside from the fact that I can't seem to get
any descriptive information on any field in any table to save.
I add the descriptive text to the field, click to save the table with
the newly-entered description, the hourglass displays and the table is
being saved, and then when the design view of the table refreshes, the
descriptions I've just entered on the various fields are gone.
Anyone else have problems with this?

|||You should contact the vendor directly. I imagine it's not supported
because column descriptions are kind of superfluous. I tend to shy away
from storing column descriptions in the database, and instead opt for good
documentation on my tables. A user can always look at the documentation but
shouldn't be forced to read a (max 255?) character description by connecting
to the database.

Features request
Hi all.
I've been working with RS for a month or so migrating all our client-side
reports (MS Access) to server-side (RS). I have a bunch of them to be
converted yet but I think I have some experience and can do some suggestions
to a product that is a very good product to be the 1st version. I hope next
version in SQL Server 2005 improves some things like:
* Add the option to select a RGB color for using it as transparency for the
Image control: You can add transparencies to the images themselves when
using GIF or PNG formats. However when images are bitmaps, since bitmap
format does not have support for transparency layers, it would be usefull to
have that support from RS itself.
* Render to .SNP format (MS Access Snapshot format).
* Within the VS IDE, when you copy a group of controls and paste them in
another report, they are not located at the same X,Y positions as they were
in the original report, but at the middle/center of the space they have been
inserted into (parent). I think that report designers would prefer to paste
the copied controls in the place they were instead of another coordinates
that sometimes are not aligned to the grid either (even though align to grid
is active).
* When you copy a control named MyUserRenamedControl1 (a textbox for
instance) and paste into the same report, since that control name is already
used, the new control is named TexboxX (being X a free number that makes the
name unique in the report). I think that if report designers have renamed a
default name component to another name (for whatever the reason), the IDE
should try to keep the same name and add numbers to the end of the name that
the designer has selected. In this case the names of new controls should be
MyUserRenamedControl2, MyUserRenamedControl3, etc.
* Rounded corners for rectangles, components for circles, ellipses, oblique
text (number of degrees selectable). This might be of less use for many
people, mainly when they use RS to generate pure-listing reports. However if
you use RS to generate invoices or other kind of documents that need quality
and be visually attractive, this kind of improvements would help a lot.

Feasibility of Filtering in this Scenario...
Background:
I'm a young developer working on a project that involves merge replication between SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition and SQL Server 2005 and I've been having a hard time wrapping my head around exactly how to implement the best filters for the subscription(s) and publication(s).

Users of our application are Auction goers who collect data about AuctionItems in a mobile db and sync that information with a central db once he or she is finished. The central db is, obviously, pre-populated with most of the information about any/all AuctionItems. Central db information is available to view/change via web access.
Multiple users can change the same Auction data so there will be overlapping partitions.
What I would like to do is:
Present the user with a list of all available Auctions for the next 2 weeks (select * from Auctions where blah blah blah). This is a simple publication to create. Now, I'd like to be able allow the user to select AuctionID 4, AuctionID 3, AuctionID 12 and then, via a seperate AuctionListing publication only download AuctionItems that apply to those IDs.
Obviously, the publication has to be created and include the AuctionItem table and all necessary related tables/columns. But how do I create a parameterized filter based on that AuctionID?
Can a subscription be "dynamically created" once those AuctionIDs are known? Obviously, I don't want to bog my mobile devices down with tens of thousands of auction listings to auctions the user is not planning to attend.
Basically, my question is: am I wasting my time or is there some clever manipulation of HOST_NAME(), SUSER_NAME(), both, or some other method that I've missed that can get only those Auctions where the the ID matches one selected by the user at runtime?
You can do it with either one publication or 2 publications.
With one publication, I can think of dynamically populating a table with the IDs from what the user chooses. The filter will be based on IDs present in this table. However note that populating the table and synchronization need to be in 2 different transactions because if they are in the same one, enumerations will be looking at not correct data.
Let me know if you have trouble setting the filter.

I've decided to go with one publication. How can I separate the population of the database dynamically from the sync call that I will need to make to pull the results down? How do split this action into separate transactions.|||One more thing to consider: I can see the feasibility of using two publications to accomplish this tasks and in some ways it might be easier. Nevertheless, consider this scenario.
We use a table called 'AuctionDownload' that is populated with the AuctionIDs and some string value that we can filter on using HOST_NAME(). This table will be included in the publication along with the main 'Auction' table.
User A subscribes, calls sync, gets a list of auctions and chooses IDs 1 and 2 that he wants listings for. He populates the rows in 'AuctionDownload' on his mobile device and syncs. That's fine.
However, imagine User B is also using the system at the same time as User A. The first time he calls sync to get the list of available auctions, his EMPTY AuctionDownload table will need to be merged with the central AuctionDownload table. Thus User A's values are erased before he or she could call sync on a different publication to get the actual listings!
Is there a work around or am I imagining this syncing scenario incorrectly.

Fast dev workstation!
Working a new gig, they gave me a pretty nice little workstation,
dual-core 3ghz 2.5gb RAM, don't know what the disk is except it's
80gb.
Anyway, I'm working a GL project where we have to produce about 30m
debits and credits from 2.5m transactions.
The SQL is something like:
select
tranid, x1, a2, gl
into #myfoo
from trantable -- 2.5m rows
cross join xtable -- 12 rows
inner join GLCOA on x1 = a1 -- 300k rows
inner join attribute table on trancode=attribcode -- ten rows
(selecting into the temp just so I don't have to wait for 30m rows to
scroll into query analyzer)
So, guess how long this takes to run, workstation running XP and
SQL2K?

Two minutes!?!?
I'm impressed.
When I was a lad, it would have taken quite a while running at 4.77mhz
to generate and write 30m records onto diskettes, I'm just saying, but
even running SQL7 on a 300mhz two-CPU server seven years ago, would
have been easily 10x slower.
I gotta look into the disk config, it's just one drive, this is an HP
workstation.

a 17 inch 1280x flat panel, OK, but could be better. Not directly a

I get the following error when running a particular query, although I know
for sure the server and network are working properly:
"[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionCheckForData
(CheckforData()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
Connection Broken"
Is this a hint that something else might be wrong with my sql server?
Any funky characters in the query? If memory servers correctly thats the
message I got when I had a } one time.

Failure to open SQL Server with given connect string
hello, Connect via an IP address
im working with VB 2005 and i have this error when triyng to connecting to the server database from my pocket pc application.

It is not likely that the datasource is "localhost", as this refers to the Pocket PC device, it should probably be the machine name or the ip address of the machine running SQL Server|||

i dont understand whats supose the connect string look like...

If that is not possible, this may be the cause of the error.

Failure Precedence Constraints stopped working in my package
I had a Send email task linked to my Sequence Containers in my package and it was working fine. Everytime the container fails it would send an email to myself.
At some point all Failure constraints stopped working. Failure constraints work if I add brand new tasks, but with the existing tasks, they don't work. The Task which fails, turns red and execution stops. Next failure task is not executed.
I am not sure what triggered it to stop working. I cannot get anything on the log
Any help is appreciated.
I've resolved this issue.
I've added an Onerror Event Handler and changed the failure constaints to Logical Or.
It is working now...

Next day failure precedences are not working again. For workaround I created onerror event handlers for each container to send an email. This time I got lock errors on the errDescription variable.
